How To Backup FireFox Bookmarks(Favorites)

I make regular backups of my Internet Explorer favorites which are placed in a folder named "Favorites" inside the user profile. In IE for every entry added to the favorites an Internet Shortcut (*.url) is created so the backup is actually a container of files with the url extension. Now that I am switching to FireFox it is important to keep my backup schedule but FireFox is using a different mechanism to store bookmarks! Instead of creating an entry for every bookmark it uses a single HTML file to hold the entire bookmarks and this HTML file is located in the user profile:
"Drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.qfb\bookmarks.html"
So by backing up "bookmarks.html" I will have my backup in place again and FireFox gives me the ability to search through my Bookmarks by keeping all the entries in this HTML format.

Get Firefox

UPDATE: This Firefox extension makes daily bookmark backups automatically and puts them in the Firefox profile directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.qfb\Backups
Extension Room :: Bookmark Backup

Thank You very much. I'm about to make up my mind which browser to choose, and I've had difficulties finding favorites' folder for Firefox. But I've typed the words "favorites", "firefox", "store" in a search engine and got here immediately. Thanks again!

This is a brand new Firefox extension (called FEBE)that allows you to create a backup of all your installed extensions and themes. The backups are created in an installable xpi format so you can easily port them to another computer.

More info/download here.

Very useful and clear clue. Congratulatios!
I would like just to add that Firefox 1.5 already comes with a backup bookmark feature included, so for the risk of having the bookmark file corrupted you don't need the suggested extension anymore. The clue about the location of the book mark is still valid, however for the ones (like me) who want to make an external backup copy of the Firefox Bookmarks.

At 5:14 PM, Blogger James said...

How do I find 1.5's backup feature? I searched help and could not find it.

My question is once you've recovered this html backup file, how do you reinstall it in Firefox to once again have your bookmarks accessible?

When I open the html file, nothing appears.

Thanks!

Nick

Nice. Exactly what I was looking for, as I'm about to do a complete drive format and clean install. Thank you!

At 7:45 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nick,

First, make sure that the bookmarks file is the correct one. Save it in another folder, and open it directly. It should have an html list of all your bookmarks. Check the filesize and make sure it is correct.

Second, in Firefox go to Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks -> Import. Browse to the folder containing the back up Bookmark file and select it. Firefox will do the rest. I just did this after doing a clean install (as above), and it worked perfectly.

Find your bookmarks.html in a Linux box at /home/user/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/bookmarks.html
or enter
find . -name bookmarks.html
at the command prompt.

At 12:29 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

thnx fer da info..bt isnt it just simple to go to Bookmarks-->Manage bookmarks-->File-->Export and save it sumwhere n import it later on rather than browsing thru a set of folders?...

At 3:40 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is a very clumsy way. There is a simpler manner:
On a Firefox window, fo to Bookmarks on the toolbar; click on Organize Bookmarks; File/Export, choose a folder and voila. But like the method described before, it creates a page with bookmarks. It is not like you can sync them between computers.

At 8:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just go to Bookmarks, Organize Favorites, File, Export, then pick where you want it to save.

Thanks for info! This pointed me in the right direction. For anyone on a Mac, let me fill in the details. On an Apple box, the path is:

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/profilename/bookmarks.html

For most people profilename is going to be "default" or some variation (for me it's "default.56q", for example)

Keep blogging..

I was looking a way around for this. I am having an Internet life than a Physical life and my Bookmarks tab floods usually and it is a tiresome, but interesting job to organize all of them.

I can't even think of losing all those precious URls.

Thanks to you and thanks to GOOGLE, which guided me here through the first search result...

Thanks a lot

why don't you just open up your bookmarks and export them to where ever you want to.

Click "Bookmarks":

click "Organize Bookmarks":

Click on "File";

Click "Export"

Then save them where ever you want them.

You can find loads of really cool and brilliant add-ons, plug-ins & extensions for both Firefox AND IE7 at InternetExplorer-Firefox.com

Definitely worth a quick visit.
